Tonight I went to a late showing of Mushishi at SIFF.
Meh. It was okay, I'm mostly glad I saw it and I enjoyed it but it was not what I was hoping for. I normally enjoy anime and Japanese movies, so I'd like to claim that the problems were with the movie rather than my ability to appreciate it. The theater was packed, a small (maybe half dozen) people left in the middle, and there was a weak attempt at applause at the end that didn't really catch on.
The other movies I've seen so far this year all had strong applause, by contrast.
The two weaknesses seemed to be the pacing and the continuity. There was a plot there, it was just difficult to keep it in mind. Maybe one of the Bugs is to blame. Or maybe the translations, there were a bit rough.
Still, 131 minute movie with slow pacing, I think there was some room for more editing.
